Zithromax (azithromycin) is a prescription drug that belongs to the group of medicines called macrolide antibiotics. It is prescribed to treat ear infections, skin infections, respiratory tract infections, as well as sexually transmitted diseases. Unless your health care provider told you otherwise, take this drug on an empty stomach an hour before or a couple hours after you have had a meal. Before you begin the treatment make sure you inform your health care provider of any health conditions that may affect your treatment, including kidney or liver disease, a history of long QT syndrome or a heart rhythm disorder. A dose adjustment may be required or you will require some additional tests for the right dosage to be prescribed. Do not take Zithromax if you ever had an allergic reaction to this drug. If you take it anyway you may have the typical symptoms of an allergic reaction – hives, swelling of your face, tongue and throat and trouble breathing. These symptoms need to be reported to the local emergency room to prevent the situation from getting worse. Take Zithromax for as long as recommended by your health care provider as otherwise not all the bacteria will be cleared out of your body and a relapse of infection is possible.
